This gag order was imposed on October 3, shortly before a federal judge issued a similar decree related to Trump’s trial regarding the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Trump, who holds a 46-point lead in the polls according to RealClearPolitics, is not primarily contending with his Republican rivals. Instead, his most direct opponent seems to be the Department of Justice, which Democrat incumbent Joe Biden runs.
During the New York trial this week, Trump’s lawyers were able to prompt Michael D. Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and a witness in the case, to admit that he had lied on past occasions. Despite this, Engoron denied a request for an immediate verdict dismissing the case and imposed the $10,000 fine on Trump.
These gag orders can be seen as a direct threat to self-government, as they prohibit one of the most popular Republicans in the country from effectively running his campaign. This is an attempt to silence Trump and impede his chances in the upcoming election.
