President Biden’s Secretary of the Army, Christine Wormuth, responded to criticisms that the Army is becoming “woke” by saying that the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are important.

“We get criticized, frankly, sometimes for being ‘woke.’ I’m not sure what ‘woke’ means. I think ‘woke’ means a lot of different things to different people,” Wormuth said. “But, first of all, if ‘woke’ means we are not focused on warfighting, we are not focused on readiness, that doesn’t reflect what I see at installations all around the country or overseas when I go and visit.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, “Nearly every branch has struggled to meet its recruitment goals for 2022, with some falling as short as 40%. Worse yet, only about a quarter of America’s youth meet current eligibility standards — and recent surveys show only 9% are even interested.”
These numbers cannot be explained by the pandemic alone. In fact, as the economy continues to struggle and inflation continues to rise, an increase in military recruitment should be evident because it is a steady job when steady jobs are difficult to come by.
One service member said, “I 100% believe the military is woke. I see daily minorities, overweight people and women not adhering to military standards. Nobody corrects them due to the fear of being fired and labeled a racist or a sexist.”
Wormuth said, “I do think we do have a wide range of soldiers in our Army, and we’ve got to make them all feel included. And that’s why a lot of our diversity, equity and inclusion programs are important.”
The problem with Wormuth’s statement is that, in the midst of arguing that the Army is not “woke,” she espoused “woke” philosophy.
Wormuth said, “One of the things I think that’s most important … is keeping the army apolitical and keeping it out of the culture wars.”
Instead of following her own advice, the Army continues to push Critical Race Theory and gender-neutral language rather than teaching recruits to be soldiers and preparing them to do what needs to be done to fight for American freedom and ideals.
